What is a DEXA scan?
DEXA stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The scanner passes two very low-dose X-ray beams at different energy levels over your body while you lie still on an open table. Because fat, lean tissue and bone absorb those two energies differently, the scanner can separate them pixel by pixel.
The result is a three-compartment model of your body, fat mass, lean soft tissue and bone mineral, measured directly rather than estimated from a formula. That’s why DEXA is widely considered the reference standard for body composition.

Common questions
Yes. A body composition DEXA scan uses a very small radiation dose, far lower than a standard chest X-ray. The technology was originally developed to measure bone density.
